Even with Update 15.9, Ocean still has plenty of water and no island cover. Its opening phase now has different visibility conditions, though: a large cyclone limits the view across the map before the familiar open conditions return later.
For our WoWS weekend, it is also worth looking ahead to Monday. The first Halloween Brawl begins on October 12, when the free Steam promotion for Ning Hai ⚓ also ends. Anyone already interested in the next update can find a more detailed explanation of the known event concept in the new Horror From the Abyss Developer Diary. We should distinguish between what is already live and what still belongs to the announced test content.
Ocean: 15 kilometers of visibility at the start of battle
Since the EU update on October 8, 2026, Ocean starts with a large cyclone. It limits maximum visibility and spotting range to 15 kilometers. After roughly seven to nine minutes, the weather clears and normal visibility returns.
Wargaming is changing the open map without adding islands or other artificial cover. The main effect is on the first few minutes, when long-range ships can normally already control large parts of the map.
Our assessment: the temporary visibility limit can give battleships and cruisers more room to reposition without immediately coming under long-range fire. It does not create permanent cover, however. Push too far forward and you need to expect to become visible from many more directions once the cyclone ends.
Positioning therefore also needs to account for the return to normal battle conditions. A spot that looks favorable during the cyclone may be far less comfortable with clear visibility.
Thunderstorms and a blizzard remain future plans
The cyclone is the first step in the weather rework. For Update 15.10, Wargaming plans two moving thunderstorm zones. Within their areas, they are intended to affect concealment and enemy firing accuracy, among other things.
A blizzard is planned for Update 15.11, initially spreading across large parts of the map before contracting again.
These variants are not yet active features of Update 15.9. Moving weather zones could eventually create further opportunities to adapt your position to changing visibility. The announced plans alone do not yet show how strongly that will affect battles.
Halloween Brawl starts on Monday
The first of three announced Halloween Brawls starts on EU on Monday, October 12, 2026, at 10:00 CEST. It runs until October 19 at 03:00 CEST.
The format is 5 versus 5 at Tier VIII. Battleships, cruisers and destroyers are allowed; aircraft carriers and submarines are excluded.
The themed maps are based on the Halloween Operations centered on Transylvania. Special parameter adjustments have been announced for two of the three Brawls. The official overview describes the first round without additional modifiers, however.
We can therefore expect a comparatively conventional Brawl in an unusual setting to begin with. Anyone planning to join can already narrow their ship selection to Tier VIII and the three eligible classes.
Ning Hai: free Steam promotion ends on October 12
The Pan-Asian Tier III Premium cruiser Ning Hai is being offered on Steam at a 100 percent discount. According to the offer information researched on October 10, the promotion runs only until October 12, 2026.
The bundle includes the ship, a Port slot and a Commander with three skill points. The offer applies to the Steam version of World of Warships and can be claimed once per account. Existing Ning Hai owners receive no additional compensation.
The research does not establish a definitive German local expiry time. Steam's displayed 18:00 has not been linked to a reliably confirmed time zone. If you want the cruiser, claim it over the weekend rather than waiting until the last minute on Monday.
Horror From the Abyss: a closer look at the known concept
The Developer Diary published on October 10 covers the Horror From the Abyss PvE event announced for Update 15.10. The mechanics described were already part of the Closed Test announcement on October 1. The new publication therefore does not establish a demonstrably changed test version.
At its center is Expeditioner, with a modular customization system. Five module areas with five development branches each produce 3,125 basic combinations mathematically, even before additional upgrades are considered. Mechanics include rockets, shields and overheating guns, as well as special Commander talents.
The four planned Operations are Vanished Expedition, Madness Crusade, Origin of Terror and Harbingers of Doom. Stars from primary and secondary tasks move players along the reward track. The event currency, Relics, is used for purposes including unlocking modules and their upgrades.
For us, the interesting part is the connection between customization and progression: modules provide different ways to configure Expeditioner, while earned Relics unlock further options. The number of combinations alone does not say how many will actually be useful in battle, though. Further development will need to show that.
You can find the wider context alongside the other test content in our article on Closed Test 15.10: New ships, a horror event and Early Access.
Conclusion
On Ocean, it is now worth planning your position for the period after the cyclone too. Monday has two practical items on the calendar: the Halloween Brawl begins and the free Ning Hai promotion ends. Thunderstorms, the blizzard and Horror From the Abyss, however, still belong to the preview of upcoming updates.
That keeps our weekend plan manageable: claim Ning Hai if appropriate, have a suitable Tier VIII ship ready, and remember on Ocean that bad weather is unfortunately not a permanent life insurance policy.
