Three quite different topics are coming together in World of Warships: Wargaming has given a much more detailed look at the planned rework of Ocean, the Public Test for Update 15.9 has finished, and time is slowly running out for European teams to enter King of the Sea XIX.
Ocean in particular is more interesting than “the map is getting weather” might initially suggest. Update 15.9 will begin with just the previously announced cyclone, but two further weather types are planned for later updates, with a much greater potential effect on positioning and sightlines.
Ocean starts with a map-wide cyclone
With Update 15.9, Ocean will first receive a cyclone that begins early in the battle.
During the weather, visibility and detectability will be limited to 15 kilometers. The cyclone will disappear after roughly seven to nine minutes, after which the map will play like the familiar open-water Ocean.
That alone noticeably changes the start of a battle. The normally extremely long sightlines and firing lanes will be temporarily restricted, creating different positioning opportunities for at least part of the match.
The cyclone is only the first step, however.
Thunderstorms are planned as moving weather zones
For later updates, Wargaming is planning a considerably more dynamic type of weather.
During a thunderstorm, two separate weather zones are intended to move across the map for around twelve minutes. Ships inside one of those zones will experience altered visibility conditions.
Planned effects include:
- Lower detectability after firing the main guns
- Better concealment in general within the weather zone
- A much shorter time before a ship disappears from view again after firing
- Altered dispersion effects during the thunderstorm
The crucial difference from the cyclone is that the zones move. Rather than covering the whole map, the weather creates temporary areas that travel across Ocean.
That could make weather a real tactical factor. Cruisers or destroyers might try to use a zone to reposition, while opponents outside it would need to adjust their shots and sightlines accordingly.
How strong the effect ultimately becomes will, of course, depend on the final balance. The mechanic is still in development.
A blizzard spreads out from the center of the map
The third planned weather type is a blizzard.
It is intended to begin in the center of the map and spread across Ocean over roughly three minutes. Later, the weather will recede towards the center again.
Its effects on visibility and battle conditions are intended to be broadly similar to those of the thunderstorm zones.
This also creates a situation that players need to react to. Instead of an open expanse of water that stays the same throughout, conditions change during the battle.
One important detail: only one weather type is intended to be active per battle.
Ocean will therefore not be hit by a cyclone, thunderstorms and a blizzard all at once. The map is also getting volumetric clouds, which are intended to be used in the Ocean Port as well.
Not all of this is coming with Update 15.9
It is worth clearly separating the upcoming update from the longer-term plans for these three weather types.
For Update 15.9, only the map-wide cyclone is currently planned.
Thunderstorms and the blizzard are planned for later updates and remain in development. Details and parameters may therefore change before release.
Even so, Wargaming's direction for Ocean is becoming fairly clear. Visually and structurally, the map will remain its familiar open-water self, but changing visibility is intended to make it less static.
Whether that will make Ocean more popular is another question. At least there will be more going on than “lots of water and a Yamato somewhere twelve kilometers away.”
Public Test 15.9 has ended
Meanwhile, the second round of the Public Test for Update 15.9 has finished.
The test ended on September 29 at 08:30 CEST. That brings the test phases for the content currently being shown to a close for the time being.
Wargaming subsequently updated the existing Public Test article and published the winners of the accompanying ship giveaway.
Players qualified by reaching the required fourth level of the Pacific Front event on the Public Test.
Eleven ships were given away in total:
Among the European winners, Tyvern28 and OloiMazi each received an Asashio, while Thunir_S and Darkshadok each received a Massachusetts.
The Enterprise went to guoyiqiao on the Asian server.
There is nothing left for other players to prepare or catch up on here. The Public Test has ended, and the giveaway is complete too.
The more interesting question now is which tested features will reach the live server, and in what form.
KOTS XIX: EU registration closes on October 5
While the Public Test is already over, King of the Sea XIX still has a concrete deadline ahead.
According to the current tournament page, registration for the European region runs until October 5, 2026, at 14:00.
The page does not explicitly state a time zone for that time. If you intend to take part, it would therefore be unwise to leave registration until the final minutes.
At the most recently checked point, 19 of a maximum of 72 teams were registered for Europe.
A team can consist of 9 to 15 players. The EU tournament itself is scheduled for October 9–25, 2026.
The map pool and ship restrictions are now also listed on the tournament page. For teams still considering entering, the question is no longer whether KOTS XIX is happening, but whether their roster will be ready in time.
Three topics, three very different timelines
The current announcements show how differently WoWS news needs to be viewed.
With Ocean, we are already looking partly beyond Update 15.9. The cyclone is close, while thunderstorms and the blizzard are still further down the line.
For Public Test 15.9, however, it is already over. Testing has finished, and the winners of the accompanying giveaway have been announced.
And for King of the Sea XIX, the calendar is what matters right now: if you want to enter with an EU team, complete registration before October 5 rather than hoping the registration button will politely stay available for a few extra hours.
Conclusion
The most exciting development this time is clearly the continuing rework of Ocean.
The cyclone in Update 15.9 is really just the beginning. Moving thunderstorm zones and a blizzard that spreads across the map before receding could make this exceptionally open map considerably more dynamic. The key will be whether the weather genuinely creates new tactical opportunities or mainly leaves everyone seeing less for a few minutes.
Public Test 15.9 can now be ticked off. The opposite applies to KOTS XIX: if you still want to take part, it is time to turn “we could do that” into “let's register now.”
