The next big journey in Where Winds Meet takes us to Qingzhou. With version 2.3, Everstone is expanding the game world with a region inspired geographically and culturally by China's Shandong province. High mountains, coastlines, villages and historical locations provide the setting for new stories and exploration content.
The developer letter and NetEase announcement of 9 October 2026 now provide a fairly concrete preview. Alongside the region, a new weapon type, helpful NPC companions, three world bosses and a PvP mode where better arguments count have been announced. All of this remains a preview: the content is officially announced, but has not yet been released.
Two dates: Qingzhou on 15 October, Penglai on 29 October
Qingzhou arrives on Thursday, 15 October 2026. After the Hidden Mountain story concludes, the journey takes us to the new region. That does not yet establish a definitive access requirement, however: the story progress actually required has not been officially explained.
NetEase gives a second date for the mysterious island of Penglai: 29 October 2026. The expansion will therefore unlock in at least two separate stages. Anyone who wants to explore everything on day one should keep that second date in mind.
An exact unlock time in German local time has not yet been provided.
Mountains, coastlines and a tomb beneath Mount Tai
Qingzhou puts particular emphasis on vertical exploration. Mountain peaks are intended to act as natural viewpoints from which you can discover further settlements, routes and hidden places. The climb therefore also becomes an opportunity to choose your own next route.
Confirmed locations include:
- Mount Tai: A vast mountain massif with historical inscriptions, temple complexes and viewpoints.
- Wellspring Town: A settlement with springs, carp and regional activities.
- Crownleek Terrace: An agricultural area with markets and local competitions.
- Yellow River Estuary: The mouth of the Yellow River, with coastal landscapes and large flocks of birds.
- Mount Penglai: A legendary place with academies, monumental statues and mysterious stories.
There is work waiting below the surface too: Everstone has announced a Han-dynasty tomb beneath Mount Tai. Traps, mechanical puzzles and dangerous creatures are intended to accompany exploration there.
For us, the connection between viewpoints and hidden places is particularly interesting. If the view from a summit really reveals the next detour, exploration gains a pleasing rhythm of its own: climb up, look around and somehow stray from the original plan again.
The Local System: residents help on your travels
Everstone wants to expand NPC encounters through the new Local System. We can get to know residents, build relationships with them and then take them on our travels. They are intended to actively help with exploration.
The announced abilities differ considerably. Eloquent residents can resolve social situations and assist in Pitch-Pot competitions, for example. Observant companions discover hidden places, cave entrances and mechanisms. Physically strong companions can transport us faster, help obtain resources and even force locked doors open.
The choice of companion could therefore influence how we solve a task. That sounds particularly interesting for players who enjoy puzzles or want to find even the most inconspicuous cave entrance.
How many companion slots there are, what unlock costs or restrictions apply, and whether the system can also be used in existing regions remain open questions.
Ribbon Drum combines control and support
The new Ribbon Drum weapon type, called 舞綾鼓 in the Japanese NetEase announcement, combines ribbons or silk bands with a drum. The ribbons are used for attacks, while drum actions can strengthen allies.
Immobilising enemies, knockback effects and abilities that can silence enemies are also officially confirmed. The weapon type therefore combines offensive control with support for the group.
This is an exciting approach for co-op and control-focused playstyles. But it does not yet tell us how well the Ribbon Drum will fit into existing builds. Damage values, cooldowns, resource requirements and global unlock conditions are missing, as is reliable information about interactions with Inner Ways and other weapons.
Your existing build can therefore stay for now. An interesting list of abilities is not a finished build guide, after all.
A new school, a new form of PvP
NetEase has also announced a new sect or school. The Japanese publication calls it 文津館, roughly Wenjin Pavilion. Its approach centres on knowledge, discussion, art and music as ways of resolving conflict.
That fits a new competitive mode featuring card-based PvP debates. Instead of weapon attacks, players challenge their opponents with verbal arguments, proverbs and psychological tactics. Anyone who enjoys tactical minigames may get another form of competition here.
A challenge as an exam invigilator, requiring you to detect cheating, and an agricultural event have also been announced. Concrete information about debate rules, rankings, rewards or card progression is still missing. The new school's entry requirements and possible gameplay advantages are also unknown.
Three world bosses with unusual fighting styles
NetEase has explicitly presented three world bosses for Qingzhou. Their English or German names are not yet unambiguously established by the available global announcement. We will therefore stick to the descriptions and Japanese names provided:
- 観潮客 fights on stilts, combining movement with traditional theatre and spear techniques.
- An elderly raftsman combines his experience on the water with a distinctive staff-fighting style.
- 祝英晗 leads a fortified compound or bandit group. His quick attacks and movements are influenced by the traditional shuttlecock game.
These different approaches could place different demands on dodging and attack timing. Specific attack patterns, rewards, difficulty levels and repeatability are not yet known, however. Recommendations for particular weapons or equipment would therefore be premature.
What we can usefully prepare before launch
The remaining days are a good opportunity to continue the current story and finish ongoing activities. That creates a good starting point for the next journey without assuming access requirements that are still unknown.
There is no basis, however, for completely rebuilding your equipment or deliberately farming supposed Qingzhou materials. Everstone has announced a second part of the developer letter, which is intended to cover the new gameplay systems in more detail. No publication date has been given yet.
Conclusion
Qingzhou brings a new region and several ideas that could be interesting beyond the next round of boss fights. The Local System and Ribbon Drum in particular deserve a closer look once their mechanics are playable. The dates are set: 15 October for Qingzhou, 29 October for Penglai.
Until then, we can continue our current journey at a relaxed pace. And perhaps collect a few good arguments for the PvP debates — a sword cannot settle every discussion, after all.
